The English and Welsh Placed Together for 2027 Rugby World Cup Down Under

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The pool stage draw was overseen by rugby legends including former All Black Dan Carter.

England and Wales will face off in the same pool for the 2027 RWC, promising a major pool stage clash in Australia. Completing the group in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This pairing echoes their infamous clash in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at Twickenham contributed to the English team's surprise group stage elimination.

Key Pool Pairings

Ireland alongside the Scots also share a pool once again, just as the scenario from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, Ireland secured a 36-14 victory, with Scotland failing to progress to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Portugal, both made a strong impression as surprise packages in France, complete that Pool D.

Significantly, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from holders and world number one the Springboks before the showpiece match, presuming the Springboks win their own group.

Knockout Ramifications

Should the pools play out in line with the current global standings, further top favourites like the All Blacks and France would remain separated from both the English and Ireland all the way to the final.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the remaining highly-seeded nation on that half of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Face Blockbuster Fixture

Tournament hosts the Wallabies have been drawn together with their great rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Group A.

Australia will kick off the World Cup in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster match designed to launch the competition.

In other groups, reigning champions the Springboks have been paired with Italy, the Lelos and the Oaks. The French team are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the USA and Samoa.

Larger Tournament for 2027

Argentina will take on the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the World Cup grows to 24 teams from the twenty who took part in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a last-16 round for the very first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

Although the winner of Pool F may avoid some of the game's heavyweights early on, they will meet the runner-up from Group B – most likely Italy – in the first knockout round.

Four of the remaining six group winners will play a team that finished third from the pool stages.
