Cancellieri Demonstrates Glimpses of Exceptional Talent in Silver Lining for Struggling Lazio

The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, an opponent that had allowed ten goals while netting just two in their most recent five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were concluding their latest protest in an ongoing feud with club owner Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?

Was Lazio's season falling apart, or was there ever a thread maintaining its structure to start with? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as head coach in the summer transfer window, only for him to later acknowledge that the club had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were about to receive for fiscal problems. Rumours that he might quit were unfounded, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.

Lazio became as messy during matches as off the field, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining opening fixtures, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to ascertain if progress is being made or self-destructing.

The Youngster's Surprising Presence

At least one man remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio during this campaign. He spent last season on loan at Parma and, early this summer, Lazio were attempting to remain there temporarily. The signing restriction forced a rethink. Lazio could not afford to thin their squad without replacements.

He joined in the first place during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He made 20 matches in the league with the club in that campaign, all but one of those as a substitute. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."

Uncovering His Best Role

Maybe Sarri was persistently working to work out the specific characteristics of the player's talent. Labeled as a flank player upon signing, Cancellieri instead found himself most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances on loan at Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
